What We Do

WASCOP is a nonprofit organization, formed for educational and charitable purposes, with the primary goal to help members build relationships with other local, state and federal law enforcement agencies so they may provide services to the citizens and visitors across Wyoming. We accomplish our work through staff and membership service on various boards, commissions, coalitions and representation at Wyoming Legislative functions.

WASCOP was formed after the Executive Boards of both the Wyoming Sheriffs Association and Wyoming Chiefs Association spent over two years discussing, researching, and planning. In January of 1991, the Executive Director from the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs facilitated a strategic planning meeting to discuss the benefits, problems, and a pathway to become a single organization that would benefit all law enforcement in Wyoming.

In April of 1991 the general membership of both organizations voted to become one, and combined the two Executive Boards, making the incoming Presidents of the old associations the President and 1st Vice President of the new organization. The new board would consist of three Sheriffs and three Chiefs, with a secretary elected at large.

OBJECTIVES AND PURPOSE

We pledge to support our members in all facets of executive and management level service, and to further support all law enforcement entities within the State of Wyoming with education, development and the application of lawful and constitutionally sound practices. We provide our support in a fiscally sound manner and commit to be faithful stewards of any funding entrusted in our care for delivery to qualifying agencies.

MEETINGS

WASCOP holds meetings as prescribed in our bylaws. Specifically, there will be a meeting of the membership at the annual WASCOP Legislative Conference and at the WASCOP Leadership Conference. Executive Board and Committee meetings are held as needed.

LEGISLATIVE ACTIVITY

WASCOP is responsive to the needs and requests of the Wyoming State Legislature for information on public safety issues, such as the annual Alcohol and Crime in Wyoming reports. WASCOP’s primary legislative activity is to provide information to individual legislators and   as they consider legislation. WASCOP monitors committee activity, proposed legislation, and provides testimony for clarification of issues as our legislature considers laws and policies that affect public safety and law enforcement statewide.
