“I just saw your segment with Ms. Ham which ended with her statement about Colorado still being 'OK after 10 years of legalization' or words to that effect. I have attached a study conducted by the Rocky Mountain High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area team which disagrees. Drug use among teens, expulsions from high school for marihuana issues, emergency room visits for accidental exposure, and a host of other issues are all up significantly. In fact:

  • MJ Use Among Colorado Teens - - - 50% above the national average

  • If Denver were a state, it would have the highest public high school past-month use rates in the country

  • 74% of Denver-area teens in treatment said they used somebody else’s medical marijuana an average of 50 times

  • Colorado MJ-related ER visits for children under five rose by 200% between 2006 and 2012 traffic fatalities in Colorado decreased 16 percent, from 2006 to 2011, which is consistent with national trends.  During the same six years in Colorado, traffic fatalities involving drivers testing positive for just marijuana increased 114 percent.

“The facts all show as marijuana is made more available, problems with use go up. This is consistent with alcohol and tobacco use. Marijuana dispensaries target youth by their advertisement. Just look at the photos during any of the mainstream media coverage. The bottom line is that medical marijuana is just a marketing tool for the legalization of the substance. We do not smoke opium to get the benefits of morphine. When is medication dispensed in manner without a measurement?  The average medical marijuana user in California is a 32 year old male with a history of substance abuse and no history of life-threatening illness.  If there were true medical uses for the substance, I believe the great entrepreneurial spirit in this country would have found a way to bring it to the market. This is an extremely important topic for this nation and the people need to be informed. This is not the marijuana of the 60’s, 70’s or 80’s. Fourteen percent of the residential admissions to the Central Wyoming Counseling Center state marijuana is their drug of choice, second behind alcohol. People must weigh the facts on both sides.

Let the people vote on it, they are the ones that are going to pay for the issues that arise, one way or another.”
